FAQ

Since 27 June 2024, individuals applying for and acquiring a foreign nationality must no longer relinquish their German nationality.
The previous requirement to seek permission to retain one’s German nationality has been done away with.

Further information is available on the website of the Federal Office of Administration.

If you have held German nationality in the past, then you may – provided the conditions of section 13 of the Nationality Act are met – reacquire German nationality through naturalisation.

Further information is available on the website of the Federal Office of Administration.

As of 27 June 2024, there is no longer an obligation to opt out of one nationality. You must no longer decide which nationality you wish to retain. If you have already received a written notice informing you of the obligation to opt out, please read the next question.

If you received the letter before 27 June 2024 and if the deadline given therein has not yet expired, you must neither relinquish your foreign nationality nor seek permission to retain your German nationality, because there is no longer an obligation to opt out of one nationality. You are therefore not required to do anything.

No, only foreigners who on 27 June 2024 or thereafter have lived in the Federal Republic of Germany for a period of at least five years are entitled to be naturalised. Individuals who met this requirement in the past but who no longer live in the Federal Republic of Germany do not have this right. The new nationality law does not contain any provisions that facilitate naturalisation for these persons. The general rules apply to them.

If you have not held German nationality in the past, you can acquire German nationality only in a few exceptional cases, pursuant to section 14 of the Nationality Act. Examples can be found on the website of the Federal Office of Administration.
