Federal Minister Westerwelle praises UN Security Council debate on climate change and security
Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (21 July) in Kabul on yesterday’s United Nations Security Council debate on the security implications of climate change:
“Resource scarcity and resource-based conflicts as a result of climate change pose a long-term threat to peace in many regions of the world. We are already seeing such effects from changes in the climate. They will only increase. The fact that the Security Council has now recognized the dangers of climate change marks an important victory for German climate diplomacy.”
Under the leadership of the German Presidency, the UN Security Council yesterday (20 July) debated the issue of climate change and its potential consequences for global peace and security for the first time since 2007. In the first-ever statement adopted by the Security Council at the initiative of its Presidency on that issue, the UN Secretary-General and UN organizations are called upon to devote more attention to the link between climate change and security in their work, and to report to the Security Council on the issue.
