The Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership Countries, Dirk Wiese, issued the following statement today (10 February 2020):
It is in the strongest possible terms that I condemn the attack on the investigative journalist Elena Milashina and the lawyer Marina Dubrovina in Grozny. The Russian authorities have the duty to fully investigate the incident and to ensure that journalism and the rule of law are effectively protected all across the Country.
Background information
Elena Milashina is a journalist with the newspaper Novaya Gazeta reporting above all from the Russian republics in the northern Caucasus, in particular Chechnya, to which she had travelled to report on a court case when she and the lawyer Marina Dubrovina were attacked by a group in their hotel on the evening of 6 February.
