Statement by Foreign Minister Maas on the attacks in Sri Lanka

21.04.2019 - Press release

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (21 April) on the attacks in Sri Lanka:

We are shocked by the horrific attacks in Sri Lanka, and we condemn them in the strongest possible terms. This despicable act apparently targeted people who had gone to church on Easter Sunday to spend time in prayer and contemplation, as well as travellers. Nothing can justify the murder of innocent people.

Our embassy in Sri Lanka is in contact with local authorities and is making every effort to swiftly determine if German citizens, too, were affected. Germans who are currently in Sri Lanka should stay clear of the sites of the attacks and follow the instructions of the authorities.

The Federal Foreign Office has set up a crisis unit. Those worried about their family members can reach it by dialling 030 50000.

At this difficult time, Germany stands as a partner alongside Sri Lanka. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and with the many injured.
