Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the end of Ramadan (Eid ul-Fitr)

22.05.2020 - Press release

Foreign Minister Maas issued the following statement today (22 May) on the end of Ramadan (Eid ul-Fitr):

Let me wish all Muslims Eid Mubarak, a blessed end to Ramadan!

The month of fasting during Ramadan is traditionally not just a time of contemplation but is also marked by time spent with friends and family, charitable giving to the community and shared time spent praying. I know that many people found social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic particularly painful at this time. But this difficult situation proved to be fertile ground for many creative and generous gestures which give us hope for the future.

At the same time, it is alarming that the global humanitarian ceasefire proclaimed by the United Nations was not respected in so many places in our world, also during Ramadan. Some are being extremely reckless as they try to create military facts in the shadow of the corona crisis. Particularly those living in regions which have suffered such a lot in the years of war and conflict would have urgently needed some breathing space. The Federal Government will not wane in its efforts to resolve conflicts and overcome the impact of the corona crisis around the world.
